Is a harmony ball safe to wear in pregnancy?

A plain answer about a pendant on a chain: what to check, what is hype, and what to do once the baby is here.

Two gold beads on a fine chain hanging over a pregnant bump

Short answer: For most women, yes. It is a light pendant on a chain, like any necklace. Choose a comfortable length and a skin-friendly metal, and after the birth keep it away from babies and small children, because chains and small parts are a hazard.

Is there any risk to the baby?

A harmony ball is a light pendant on a chain. We are not aware of any evidence that wearing one harms a pregnancy, and there is no evidence that it helps either. You may read claims about calming the baby or affecting its hearing. We don’t make them. Wear it because you like it.

The chain

The practical points are the ones that apply to any long necklace. Choose a length that doesn’t pull on your neck, adjust it as the bump grows, and check the clasp works easily. Many women take it off to sleep, because a long chain can tangle in the night.

Skin and metals

Pregnancy can make skin more sensitive. If you have reacted to jewellery before, ask the seller what the alloy contains. Stainless steel is widely worn but is not nickel-free, and sterling silver contains copper. See our silver ball necklace guide and gold ball necklace guide.

After the birth: it is not a toy

This is the point that matters most. A harmony ball is jewellery, not a baby toy.

  • Don’t let a baby or toddler chew or pull the pendant. The ball and the bell are small parts.
  • Babies grab necklaces. When you hold your baby, tuck the pendant inside your top or wear a shorter chain.
  • Never leave a necklace in the cot, the pram or the bath.
  • Keep it out of reach when you are not wearing it.

Check before you buy

Any pendant with small parts should be kept away from children under three. The ball closes tightly, but the chain is the hazard around babies.

When to ask your midwife

If you have a specific worry, such as a skin condition or a history that makes you cautious, ask your midwife or doctor. They know your circumstances; we only make jewellery.
